She looked up at him and returned the smile, even if it was a bit off. Evey groaned and knocked her knuckles on the top of her head a couple times before looking up at the ceiling. "Nothing makes sense right now. Not...not school, life...anything. I mean, a year ago, I could just look at my problems and shrug, you know? But now...now this damn person screwed that all up and I realize now that my family isn't just screwed up. It's downright dysfunctional. Am I making any sense at all?"

"I think it's good, when nothing makes sense, it's when you think you know what you're doing, that's when you should be careful." David leaned his head back against the shelves. " You're making perfest sense. Now this ~person~ would that be your brother?"

Evey nodded curtly. "Yes, that would be my brother." She gritted her teeth and her hands balled in to fists. She was actually surprised at her own anger. "He showed back up after almost a year in the form of a letter. Can you believe that? One letter after a year."

David slowly blinked his eyes "It's something isn't it would you rather have never heard from him again?." he concentrated on keeping his own loss from showing on his face. "I can believe it but I think the letter is just a start. It must be hard for him to coming back after all that time, after leaving you. It would have been so much easier to just forget. But he didn't. He is going to face his own guilt and your anger. It was probably easier to start with a letter, for both of you." He closed his eyes "A letter is better than nothing."

"No." Evey countered. She stood up and leaned against the opposite book shelf. "He abandoned my mother and I." Her eyes fixed on something out the window and she didn't flinch anymore at the storm.

"And that" David breathed "was a mistake. But if you loved your brother, and if you didn't you wouldn't be this upset, than you should give him the chance to fix his mistake. You don't have to forgive him but if you refuse to meet him halfway you will be just as bad as he is."

Evey crossed her arms over her stomach and met his eyes. She chewed her lower lip while she thought. "You're right. You're absolutely right. I am just as bad as he is." She sat back down across from him and hugged her knees to her chest. "I just don't know if I can forgive him at all."

David looked back at Evey who had finally met his gaze. "Give him a chance to earn your forgiveness and trust me it's going to take him longer to forgive himself than anything else. That is if he has any decency which he must if you love him. I trust you judgment." he gave a half-hearted laugh.

"Well, that makes one of us." She laughed as well. Her hand went back to her pocket and she took out the letter, running her fingertips over the uneven handwriting that spelled out her name. "What would you do, David?"

David thought hard. What would he do if his mother sent him a letter after sixteen tears. "I would jump for joy that hey came back and I would never let them leave me again. But that's not a very healthy response. I think you should hear him out, meet face to face and talk. Then decide if you are willing to let him back into your life." He nodded. Yeah, that sounded good.

"I don't think he wants to see me..." Evey admitted, staring at the letter and its broken seal. "He just apologized, told me things I all ready knew, and that was it." She inhaled a shaky breath and forced back the tears that had gathered in her eyes.

"Could you write back to him, and ask to meet him." David asked while standing up. He brushed off his hands on his robes and held one out the Evey. "You'll be just fine. Eventually."

Evey took his hand and tucked the letter back into her robes. "I suppose I could do that." She stood and smoothed her robes before offering a small smile. "Shall we go back to Gryffindor Tower. If any teachers were to find us here, I'm sure they'd assume the worse."

"Yes, yes of course." David laughed nervously and walked out of the library. He turned to Evey with a puzzled look on his face "What would the worst be exactly?"

Evey laughed. "You don't want to know, trust me." She put a friendly arm around his shoulders -She had to stand on her tiptoes-, suddenly in high spirits and smiled. "So...are good friends now?"
